Lewes police arrested a man Sept. 23 after finding his pickup truck stuck in the sand on Lewes Beach stocked with a selection of weapons and ammunition.

Lewes Police Chief Thomas Spell said the Ford Ranger registered to the Maryland man was found about 6:30 a.m. stuck in the sand near the water. Inside the truck, Spell said, officers found five weapons: three handguns, a shotgun and an assault-style rifle, along with hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

Schools in the downtown Lewes area were placed under secure status while police searched for the man, who is now in police custody.

The Cape Henlopen School District has lifted secure status for Fred Thomas Middle School, the Fred Thomas Building, Lewes Elementary School and Cape Henlopen High School.
