Helena Pepper, new owner of Puttin’ on the Ritz hair salon in Milton, took over the salon after Pat Wyatt retired to Florida.

The salon is located at 626 Mulberry St. in Milton.
The salon is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. To make an appointment, call 302-684-1522. |
Pepper, however, is no new kid on the block when it comes to styling and coloring hair. She has managed the salon for 17 years, so when Wyatt offered to turn over the reins Oct. 1, Pepper jumped at the chance.
“This place feels like home. People like to come in here and feel comfortable. Some salons you go in and feel intimidated,” said Pepper.
Locals may know Pepper, who helped to open Clippers & Curls about five years ago, a smaller salon three doors down from Puttin’ on the Ritz.
Clippers & Curls later became Puttin’ on the Ritz – an expanded salon with a bigger space and more services that opened in the Clipper Square plaza at the corner of Route 16 and Mulberry Street.
Pepper employs four full-time stylists, and she’s looking to bring in another, she said.
She said her clientele includes retired women, as well as nine-to-fivers.
“The older crowd is our bread and butter. They come every week,” she said.
But so do busy professionals, both men and women.
“I do a lot of color and foiling. Haircuts? We have a lot of business people – a lot of men’s haircuts. They come in every two to three weeks,” she said. “Our clients are from 90 to 2-year-olds.”
Pepper also said walk-ins are frequent.
“Over the years, we’ve seen a different clientele. Milton’s really growing. Word of mouth brings us business, but we also have a good reputation,” she said.
In addition to cuts and colors Pepper offers waxing, manicures and pedicures.
An extra room in the back will soon be turned into a tanning booth, too. Pepper also said she plans to offer specials – from haircuts to gift baskets for the holiday season.
Wendy Stout is a 10-year veteran of the salon and Pepper’s right hand, said Pepper.
“We’re professional, yet friendly and homey. We’re locals. Our clients are not only our clients, but our good friends,” said Stout.
“When you come in here on Friday, everyone knows each other,” said Stout.
“We’re down-to-earth girls, very hometown. I know everybody in Milton, and they all know me,” said Pepper. “It’s going to be changing here – for the better.”
