Maria Barta Bennett, enjoyed gardening

June 22, 2012

Maria Barta Bennett, 65, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born Jan. 23, 1947, in Austria and immigrated to the United States at the age of 4 with her parents.

After crossing the Atlantic Ocean by ship, Maria and her parents were some of the last immigrants to actually be processed through Ellis Island in New York City. Maria lived in Lewes for 33 years with her husband Judson Bennett, a retired Delaware River pilot and former Lewes city councilman.

She enjoyed gardening, reading, and playing with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, A. Judson Bennett; her son, Brian J. Mann; her daughter, Erin M. Erney; her stepson, Walter J. Bennett; her sister, Hilda Briggs; and six grandchildren. She will be missed by her family and friends.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 28, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway in Lewes. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Maria's name to Delaware Hospice Center at 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963; or Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, 111 W. 11th St., Wilmington, DE 19801.
