Maxine Fluharty named ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week

Terps rookie earns weekly honor of her career
September 21, 2011

Freshman forward Maxine Fluharty of the Maryland field hockey team has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week, the league announced Sept. 20. She led No. 3 Maryland (7-1, 1-0 ACC) to its first conference win of the year, as she scored the game winner in a 4-3 victory at No. 8 Boston College (6-2, 0-1 ACC) Sept. 16.

In the win over the Eagles, Fluharty put the Terrapins on the board in the 24th minute after she dribbled into the circle and sent in a hard shot. After the Eagles twice came back from a one-goal deficit to tie the game, Fluharty tipped in a shot from Jemma Buckley with less than two minutes remaining in overtime for the Terrapins' 12th straight ACC win over the last four seasons.

At UMass Sept. 18, she scored in the 53rd minute and tallied two shots on goal.

The weekly award is the first of Fluharty's career and the third of the season for Maryland. The freshman follows teammates Buckley and Jill Witmer as winners.

Maryland returns to action Saturday, Sept. 24, when it plays host to Wake Forest (1-6, 0-1 ACC) Saturday at 1 p.m. Due to a 12:30 p.m. football game on campus, all fans will be charged $15 to park in the lots surrounding the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
