McDonald’s photo doesn’t show whole picture

March 3, 2023

Cape Gazette, you will serve public and planners’ interest by replacing your Feb. 24 photo of the Milton McDonald’s site. The printed photo crops the intersection and shows only the ease of access for westbound customers. The photo and DelDOT’s projected one-second McDonald’s-caused delay ignore the reality of this intersection. If implemented as proposed, this intersection will be a calamity to all eastbound, northbound and southbound traffic, those wanting burgers and those attempting to get to their destinations.

Nothing short of space-clearing eminent domain will prepare this intersection for projected traffic, with or without McDonald’s. The home, two businesses and southwest segment of the McDonald’s parcel need to be sacrificed for turning lanes or a roundabout.

And as to DelDOT’s quoted one-second McDonald’s-caused delay at this intersection, that is ridiculous. DelDOT’s projection fulfills their requirement to identify highway access for business applicants, not passage or safety viability. Union Street Extended is curved and dangerous at this shopping center exit. No turn lanes at the Route 16 crossroad yield long queues and driver exasperation today. With McDonald’s 700 trips per day, this will add much more than one more second. It will be a calamity.
