Melvin L. Hopkins Sr., retired carpenter

Melvin L. Hopkins Sr. was born Aug. 23, 1931, to Noah Lee Hopkins Sr. and Anna Mae Burton Hopkins in Millsboro. Melvin was lovingly known as “Bubbles.” He departed this life Sunday April 18, 2021, at Cadia Healthcare, Millsboro.

Bubbles’ education started with many schools in Millsboro, Johns School, Friendship, Warwick and Millsboro Betts Pond.  He was awarded a GED from James H. Groves High School May 27, 1981.  He worked as a carpenter most of his life for DFD and Braxton Jackson.  He also drove trucks for Parker Block Inc.  His hobbies were making Christmas wreaths and crosses.

He served in the U.S. Army, spent his time in Alaska before being honorably discharged.  His favorite food was anything my mother cooked; (I remember him saying that when he married her).

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Preston, Linford, William and Noah; three sisters, Viola Drummond, Minnie Bibbins and Elva Wise; and one son Melvin L. Hopkins Jr.   

He leaves behind his wife, Frances A. Hopkins; one son, Anthony L. Hopkins Sr.; stepchildren, Coley Harmon (Elisa), Barbara Wright, Henry Harmon (Jean), Tyrone Harmon (Cynthia) Brenda Hampton; and a host of nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

Celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday May 1, at St. John 2nd  Baptist Church, 26602 Mt. Joy Road, Millsboro. Family and friends may visit two hours prior to service.
