MERR to host ‘Ocean’ documentary screening Sept. 21

Conservation and industry leader discussion to follow
September 16, 2025

Kicking off its yearlong 25th anniversary celebration, the Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute will present a special free screening of the acclaimed 2025 documentary, “Ocean with David Attenborough,” at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive, Lewes.

In the film, Attenborough, a biologist and natural historian, takes viewers on a journey showing there is nowhere more vital for humans’ survival, more full of life, wonder or surprise, than the ocean. Through spectacular sequences featuring coral reefs, kelp forests and the open seas, Attenborough shares why a healthy ocean keeps the entire planet stable and flourishing.

Following the film, attendees will have a noteworthy opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session with distinguished guests Kevin Mohs and Suzanne Thurman.

A former executive producer and vice president of production for National Geographic, Discovery and Animal Planet, Mohs brings a wealth of experience from his work on acclaimed series such as "Ocean Xplorers," "Titanic: 20 Years Later with James Cameron" and "Life Below Zero."

Thurman is founder and executive director of the MERR Institute, based in Lewes. A leading expert in marine mammal stranding response and rehabilitation in the state, Thurman will provide insights into the local conservation efforts that mirror the global mission showcased in the film.

MERR is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of marine mammals and sea turtles through rescue, rehabilitation, research and education. For 25 years, MERR has served as the only response and rescue organization for marine mammals and sea turtles stranding in Delaware. Support for these animals includes food and care, veterinary treatment, transportation and supplies.

"We are thrilled to mark this incredible milestone with our community," Thurman said. "This film beautifully illustrates the majesty and fragility of our oceans, which is at the very heart of MERR's mission. To have Kevin Mohs, whose work has brought so much awareness to the natural world, join us for this conversation makes the event even more special."

Admission is free, but tickets must be reserved in advance at cinemaarttheater.eventive.org. Seating is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. To learn more, go to merrinstitute.org.
