MERR rescues young harp seal from North Shores beach

March 5, 2023

Representatives from the Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute rescued a young male harp seal Feb. 28 in North Shores near Rehoboth Beach.

The seal was observed by a beachgoer who was concerned when he saw the animal rolling around on its back in the sand. This is sometimes an indication that the seal is infested with lice. Luckily for the seal, the beachgoer called MERR to report this little guy.

The seal was assessed as being underweight in addition to his behaviors, so the decision was made to rescue him immediately. He was very alert and lively during the rescue, which is a good sign. The seal was collected from the beach and taken to the MERR facility in Lewes for treatment and assessment before being transported to the National Aquarium that evening for the remainder of his rehabilitation.

MERR Institute representatives hope for the best for this beautiful animal, and they are grateful to everyone who helped this young seal get the care he needs. For more information about MERR Institute, go to merrinstitute.org.
