The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation will present The Metropolitan Opera’s live broadcast of "Manon Lescaut" at 12:55 p.m., Saturday, March 5, at Cape Henlopen High School Theater.
The Met stage ignites when soprano Kristine Opolais and star tenor Roberto Alagna join forces in Puccini’s obsessive love story, "Manon Lescaut." Opolais sings the title role of the free-spirited country girl who transforms herself into a Parisian temptress, while Alagna is the dashing student who desperately woos her. Director Sir Richard Eyre places the action in 1940s occupied France in a film noir setting. “Desperate passion” is the phrase Puccini himself used to describe the opera that confirmed his position as the preeminent Italian opera composer of his day. Famed Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi leads the stirring score.
Lunch from Hobos Restaurant will be available in the high school atrium starting at noon and continuing through the first intermission. Approximate end time is 4:10 p.m.
In addition to the opera performance, the HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or various production crew members while showing behind-the-scenes workings. This beautiful production is the seventh in The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series of 10 dates of live simulcast transmissions for 2015-16.
