The Washington Blade held its 18th annual Summer Kickoff Party May 16 at the Blue Moon in Rehoboth Beach. The event is a fundraiser for the Blade Foundation’s Steve Elkins Memorial Fellowship in Journalism, funding a summer position awarded to Abigail Hatting.
Hatting, a rising senior at American University in Washington, D.C., studied journalism with minors in political science and Spanish. She has served as local news editor of The Eagle student newspaper at American University and as an intern for Voice of America News. She will be reporting on LGBTQ+ news in Delaware.
Notable speakers included Gov. Matt Meyer and Sen. Russ Huxtable, D-Lewes, who spoke about his introduction of a constitutional amendment to codify the right of same-sex couples to marry. Kevin Naff, editor for the Washington Blade, also spoke.
Ashleigh Biden, daughter of former President Joe Biden, was scheduled to appear to accept an award on behalf of her brother, Beau Biden, but had to cancel.
