Beacon Middle School invited students and advisory classes to showcase their creativity and celebrate February as Black History Month through its annual Door Decorating Contest, emphasizing themes of freedom, equality, diversity and pride.
The contest encouraged students to highlight an influential African American, a significant group or event, or an important invention. Each door display connected to a specific content area, such as STEM, English language arts or world languages, or it could simply reflect creativity and inspiration related to Black history and culture.
Judging took place from Feb. 23 to 26. Encore teachers, office staff, administrators and Junior Justice League student members were tasked with touring the hallways and ranking the doors according to their judging sheet. One winner from each grade level was chosen, and an overall building winner was also selected. Grade-level winners had the opportunity to enjoy donuts for their advisory class, while the building winner would receive a small pizza party.
Students were encouraged to get creative while honoring the contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout history. “This contest is a fun and engaging way for our students to celebrate Black History Month while learning about influential figures and events that have shaped our world,” said Dr. Kathleen Sheehan, Beacon Middle School principal. “It’s inspiring to see how students connect history to their own creativity and classroom communities.”
