Looking to provide the Cape Region with a wider range of services, Trading Post Pawn Shop owners Brian and Tess Hitchens are expanding and opening Midway Auction House. Their first auction is set for Friday, May 31, and will comprise items from multiple estates.

Brian has been in the pawn business for decades. He and Tess opened Trading Post Pawn nearly 10 years ago near the Movies at Midway, outside Lewes. Their new auction house is located a few doors down, in the same building.

There was a need to do more, said Brian.

“We have the ability to go to locations and help people get rid of everything,” said Brian. “We can point people in the right direction, with the goal of maximizing profitability.”

With a week to go before the first auction, the space already had dozens of tables full of items. There will be another 70 tables added, said Brian.

“We have so many ideas and so many plans,” he said.

Tess said Brian got her interested in the pawn shop and auction house world. Prior to opening their own, she said they would go to others.

“One day, we decided to start our own because there was nothing else like that around here,” said Tess, who’s excited about the opening of the auction house. “We’ve been building the brand for seven years. This is a new adventure. We’ve always liked auctions, and we’ve got so much stuff, so we decided to do this too.”

The plan is to have an auction every other week and go from there, said Tess. If they’re a big hit, they could be weekly, she said.

The auction house has furniture, outdoor equipment, fine jewelry, tools, coins, decoys, flatware, diamond rings, name-brand purses, electronics, small appliances and more.

The first auction takes place at 5 p.m., Friday, May 31. The items up for auction will be available for preview noon to 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, and Thursday, May 30. Sales will be cash or credit card with ID. There will be 4% added to credit card sales. There will be no buyer's premium. There will be a $10 registration fee. All items are being sold as is with removal the day of the sale, with the exception of large items.
