Midway Lions Club celebrates 20th anniversary

Club inducts new member, donates to Special Olympics Delaware
May 9, 2019

The Midway Lions Club celebrated its 20th anniversary by inducting a new member and presenting a donation to Special Olympics Delaware during an April 15 luncheon.

The club was founded in April 1999 when then-District Gov. Ted Reiver asked Lion Jim Burdette to form a club. At the time, Jim was a Rehoboth barber who had the opportunity to ask many men, in particular, to help form a club.

Jim passed away in 2004, but his widow Lion Rosemary Burdette continued with the club; she and Reiver spoke to members about the club’s history. Reiver, a past international director, also inducted new member Mary Costello.

Lion Barbara Spence, co-chair of the Lion District 22-D Special Olympics Committee, and Special Olympian Michael Bowe talked about the benefits of athletics and Special Olympics programs. As in every year, the Midway Lions Club presented a donation check for Special Olympics to Spence.

Midway Lions Club members are selling raffle tickets for a silver 2019 Jeep Cherokee from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., every Friday and Saturday throughout the summer outside Atlantic Liquors. Funds raised are used to support community organizations.

The Midway Lions Club meets at 12 p.m. on the first and third Monday of every month, except July and August, at the Greene Turtle in the Villages of Five Points. Call 302-645-2962 for details.
