Mike Wardian wins Community Matters 5K

Ultra runners claims two titles in two days

Mike Wardian, 51, of Rehoboth Beach won the Community Matters 5K Aug. 9 in Dewey Beach, running 17:46.5 to hold off a late charge from Andrew Garcia, 33, who ran 17:46.9.

Wardian also won the Rehoboth Beach Patrol 5K the next morning, Aug. 10, and placed fifth at the the Maggie’s Mile at Cape High Aug. 8.

Pete Lobianco, 47, of places unknown (it wasn’t listed) was third overall and the first masters runner to finish in 18:07. Nina Thompson, 35, of Pittsburgh, Pa., was eighth overall and first female in 19:01. 

Kara Rubinich, 46, of Downingtown, Pa., was the female masters champion in 21:00.2.  

There were 10 states and two European countries represented in the field.

High school cross country runners were among eight people who hailed from Mount Wolf, Pa. Heath Lentz, 16, of Mount Wolf ran 18:33; Levi Henry, 16, ran 19:04; and Ethan Reigle, 17, and Conner Keener, 14, ran 19:50.

Notables: Sophia Treglia, 16, of Dover ran 19:47.

Trey Mitchell, 31, the Caesar Rodney wrestling coach, ran 24:12.

Glenn Parr, 63, of Rehoboth won his age group in 27:54.

Steve Kessler, 70, of Rehoboth won his age group in 30:14.

Cindy Redefer, 62, of Rehoboth won her age group in 32:30.

Late breaking: The PFC Joseph “Dimps” Marquez Memorial 5K Aug. 10 on the Junction and Breakwater Trail, beginning and ending at Mission BBQ, attracted 98 runners, some of whom ran the Rehoboth Beach Patrol 5K on the Boardwalk just an hour or so earlier. Matt Sparacino, 47, was the overall winner in 19:01. Virginia Welch, 25, was the female winner in 25:06.
