Milford Museum program to revisit du Pont family April 20

April 10, 2024

The Milford Museum will continue its American History Series at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 20, at Milford Public Library, 11 S.E. Front St., Milford.

Historian Lucas R. Clawson will present “A Brief Introduction to the du Pont Family and the DuPont Company, Part II,” following up on the popularity of his August presentation about the du Pont Family.

In the first presentation, the discussion focused on why the du Pont family came to America and how they built a worldwide explosives business. In this second part, Clawson will take the family and company into the 20th century. The program will address how DuPont went from producing explosives to a variety of other products, as well as how it responded to many challenges, including two world wars, congressional investigations, world’s fairs and consumer demand.

Clawson is a historian at Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington. He works with the historical records of the DuPont Company, du Pont family and businesses in the Delaware Valley, using them to create public programming and lead discussions with Hagley’s staff. He also helps support scholarly research on topics such as the DuPont Company in the American Civil War and the U.S. Navy during the 19th century. A graduate of Appalachian State University and the University of Delaware, Clawson has been with Hagley since 2007.

Sponsored by the Milford Museum, these monthly programs focus on a variety of topics concerning local, state and national history.
