Milford Relay for Life goes 'Over the Rainbow'

Seeking a cure for cancer
April 30, 2011

This year, Milford Relay for Life will be going “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” with the annual Relay being held Friday and Saturday, June 17 and 18, at Milford Middle School. Funds raised through Relay for Life have been helping the American Cancer Society make dreams come true through the event in Milford since 1998.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life events are held annually and raise funds to help find a cure for cancer. In support of the efforts, Milford Relay for Life celebrates its 13th year in 2011.

The theme for this year’s event, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” is inspired by the colored ribbons that have come to be recognized as icons representing various types of cancers and other diseases.

To date, there are more than 30 teams registered to participate in the 2011 Relay, and a goal of raising $140,000 has been set.

Relay 2011 will begin at 4:30 p.m. with survivors registration, followed by the Survivors Reception at 5 p.m. All survivors are invited to attend this kick-off event and can register online or by calling 302-422-4026 or 302-422-5339.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the first lap at 7 p.m. Children will have their own special lap at 8 p.m., and the activities and excitement will continue throughout the night, with each team having at least one member on the track at all times.

Perhaps the most breathtaking part of the evening is the luminaria ceremony, which begins at 9 p.m. The track is lined with white and gold luminary bags, each with an “in honor of” or “in memory of” message. Participants and attendees gather around the track to honor and celebrate the lives of all those recognized. Luminaria can be purchased online or from any Relay for Life participant. They can also be purchased on-site at the event.

The chairwoman of this year’s event is Tina Faulkner, and her co-chairwoman is Shelly Dillon.
