Millsboro’s Lynden Prosser hits the big screen

‘Children of the Sea’ debuts at Movies at Midway Aug. 14
August 14, 2020

Since he was 8 years old, Lynden Prosser has dreamed of being on the big screen.

His dream is about to become a reality starting Friday, Aug. 14, when his voice work will be featured in the animated film “Children of the Sea,” set to begin showing at Movies at Midway.

“Children of the Sea” is a Japanese anime film that originally came out in Japan in 2019. The movie has been dubbed into English in time for a wide release on Blu-Ray, DVD and streaming services Sept. 1.

Lynden, 12, plays the role of Umi, one of the three main characters in the story, which centers on a girl named Ruka who sees a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her father works. She befriends two mysterious boys at the aquarium, Umi and Sora, who her father says were raised by dugongs, which are sea mammals similar to manatees. The children hear a strange call from the sea and share a supernatural connection to the disappearance of aquatic life in the ocean.

Lynden said he was cast in the role after an audition and recorded his role in March, just before the COVID-19 pandemic began in earnest. He said the film was originally slated to premiere at Christiana Mall, but the pandemic put the movie business on hold.

As theaters have reopened in limited capacity, Movies at Midway agreed to show the film during a week-long engagement before it heads for wider release.

Lynden said he became interested in acting and performing when he was around 8 years old. Born in Lewes but now living in Millsboro, he started his career on the local circuit with Clear Space Theatre Company and took acting classes via Zoom even pre-pandemic, in New York City.

Lynden said he recorded his voice in New York over a week and a half. He said he watched a playback of the film on the screen, with the audio in a headset, filling in his lines as the film went along. Lynden said when he sees the film at Movies at Midway, it will be his first time viewing it with his voice as Umi.

While he likes acting on stage, Lynden said he finds voice acting fascinating and interesting, as it allows him to be creative with how he interprets a character. He said voice acting requires the same amount of skill and preparation as acting live. Lynden said he’d like to do more voice work in the future.

Besides acting, he said he enjoys sports such as hockey, basketball and golf, as well as vlogging on YouTube, where he posts videos he edits and shoots himself.

“Children of the Sea” will begin showing at 1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 14, with two shows a day – at 1 and 7 p.m. –  for the next week. Lynden himself will be on hand at the Saturday, Aug. 15 showings for meet-and-greets. Tickets are available at the Movies at Midway box office.
