Milton 8-10 all-stars claim District 3 championship

Big fifth leads to 11-1 victory, spoiling impressive Lewes run to title tilt

It looks like the Cape baseball program will have plenty of players to choose from for the foreseeable future.

No matter what, a Cape Region team was going to be named District 3 8-10 baseball champion, as the title game July 11 featured an undefeated Milton team against a red-hot Lewes club. In this rendition of a divided house, Milton claimed fame 11-1.

“We worked hard, and we got this one,” said Jackson Kulp.

Krew Johnson took the ball for Milton, fanning nine batters over 4.2 innings of work, conceding just one run on one hit.

“My catcher and I have good chemistry,” Johnson said.

Lewes struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Deacon Jones crossed the plate during Shane Reynolds’ at-bat, putting the underdogs up 1-0. Milton responded immediately when Jace DeLacy tied things up 1-1 in the bottom of the first. With two runners in scoring position, Brock Davis smoked a ball into a gap in center field to score Wyatt Dean and give Milton a 3-1 edge. Davis scored himself when Bryce DeLacy walked.

Both teams settled down following the early exchange, as quality pitching and fundamental defense from both teams held things in check.

“We make them practice, but they're the ones that put in the work and want to be part of it, and they do a heck of a job,” said manager Bob DeLacy about the defense. “Super proud of Lewes too. They battled, but Milton came out on top tonight.”

Leading 4-1 to start the fifth, Milton must have smelled blood in the water because the offense burst like a volcano following the first out. Hill and Bryce DeLacy came around to score when Kulp collected a two-strike hit. Kulp scored on a fielder’s choice to make it 7-1 before a throwing error allowed Jacob Reynolds to reach, and Dean and Johnson to score. After Reynolds crossed, Hudson Libby followed two batters later, giving Milton the 11-1 lead they would need for an early close to the game.

To their credit, Lewes rallied with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to load the bases, but Jase DeLacy recorded the final out via strikeout to kick-start the celebrations.

“I wish I could name just one player; it was everybody, it was a whole team effort. The whole team hit [and] we didn't make many errors in the field, and everybody contributed,” Bob DeLacy said. “I'm super proud of this team and glad of what they did. Excited to get them to the states.”

Milton will square off against the winner of the Monday, July 21 game between the District 1 and District 2 winners at Nanticoke Little League. Milton’s game is set for 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 22.
