Milton Elementary FAME students showcase talents

Artists, actors take stage to highlight work in immersive learning program

Milton Elementary students in an after-school theater and art camp delighted peers and family with a musical performance and collaborative art showcase Dec. 15 in the school auditorium.

Friends At Milton Elementary coordinators Brittany Bailey and Kacie Goins said students could choose to attend art or theater camp in the free program that began Oct. 4 and included times for snacks, physical activity and homework help.

“Students meet on Wednesdays for our FAME Camp Day that is run by our community partnerships,” Goins said. “They were able to practice nine Wednesdays to get ready for the show.”

Cat Flaherty of CopyCat Paint Parties led campers through a variety of activities that one student called “together projects,” which began with one drawing that was passed around to all children so they could add details to the piece.

Art students in grades two through five worked together to create a painted graffiti wall and a woven wall, made by threading ribbons and other materials through a plastic base. Campers made tinfoil statues as well as interactive sidewalk chalk scenes into which they could place themselves.

Theater students, led by Milton Theatre Education Director Kerinne Walls, were divided into grade levels to learn to perform musical acts. Second- and third-graders sang songs about “Bad Guys of Broadway” while fourth- and fifth-graders finished the show with a Christmas carol sing-along.

Students will have two spring performances as well, Goins said.

FAME provides enrichment activities to improve the academic success of students from Title I schools. Schools are designated as Title I based on the percentage of students who come from low-income families.

In spring 2019, FAME was awarded a Delaware Department of Education 21st Century Nita M. Lowey Community Learning Center program grant of $320,000 a year for up to five years, for a total of $1.6 million to expand summer and after-school programs, and create partnerships with local organizations.
