Milton Garden Tour set Sept. 22

September 19, 2019

The Milton Garden Club will present its 19th Annual Garden Tour, featuring six diverse private gardens and one public garden, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 22. There is no rain date, but if a hurricane or major storm hits, the tour will be rescheduled to Saturday, Sept. 28.

Four of the gardens are clustered together in-town within walking distance. The other three are out-of-town but close together.

The Welch Pharmacy, which will be open to visitors, is a tour highlight. “The pharmacy is awesome,” said garden club member Kathryn Greig. “The original showcases and cabinets are still in place. We are so fortunate that the owner Roberta Hagen is having it open.”

Highlighted gardens include two very tropical gardens complete with palm trees, citrus fruit trees, banana trees and a variety of exotic tropical plants, a whimsical g-scale railroad garden, a terraced garden with an in-ground pool, a young garden with many features including a large shade garden, a half-acre garden brimming with flowering perennials, eight water features, arbors and arches and a spectacular view of Red Mill Pond, and much more. The public garden is the Pollinator Preserve next door to the Milton Historical Society. It is a conservation project by the Women’s Club of Milton and is planted with over 300 plants to attract bees, birds and butterflies.

Special events in the gardens include 21 artists painting, a plant sale, lavender products for sale, baked goods, a weaver, decorative gourds, Beachscapes by Amy, and music by Dave Downing on his steel drums, Jeff Evans on guitar, Ann Gilligan on the keyboard and the Rob Dolan guitar duo. The Master Gardeners will have a booth to answer gardening questions. The Milton Community Food Pantry will be accepting food and monetary donations as well as selling raffle tickets for No Dirty Dishes For a Month, a prize of six gift cards to local restaurants.

Advance tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Salon Milton, Peppers Greenhouses, Hillside Flowers and Milton Historical Society in Milton, GlassHowes in Georgetown and at Lewes Printing in Lewes. Day of tour tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the Milton Garden Club booth outside the Milton Historical Society at 210 Union St., garden #6, Carol and Gary Smith at 207 Heronwood Lane, and Peppers Greenhouses.
