Milton public arts program to resume in summer

June 2, 2024

Milton’s public arts program is set to resume this summer in Mill Park, the first display since the Christmas tree exhibit in December.

“It’s going to keep happening,” said Barry Goodinson, chair of the economic development committee. “It’s been very well received by the community, and we’ve installed the three footers and lighting in the park to accommodate future displays.”

He said the committee, which will meet at 5:30 p.m., Monday, June 10, at Milton library to discuss the program’s future, is looking for artists to exhibit this summer. Just what the exhibit will be has not yet been determined. Goodinson said the committee is also waiting to hear from the Delaware Division of the Arts on a grant request submitted for a project this fall. The division has been a patron of Milton’s public art program since it started in 2022.

This summer’s project would be the fifth entry into Milton’s public arts program, which was started as a way to encourage tourism.

The first entry was in September 2022, with three sculptures loaned by Lewes-based artist Roy Fitzgerald. The second was a mural project created by 12 local artists called “Greetings.” After the exhibit closed down, several of the murals were relocated around town, most notably along Governors Walk. That was followed by”Gather Round,” a selection of faux bois furniture created by Milton artist Allen Sangree. Finally, in December, Christmas trees were erected and decorated by students from Milton’s three schools: Milton Elementary, H.O. Brittingham and Mariner Middle.
