Milton robotics students advance to world competition

HOB, Mariner Middle teams dominate Bots at the Beach contest
March 12, 2022

H.O. Brittingham Elementary and Mariner Middle robotics teams won big at the Delmarva Region IQ Championship: Bots at the Beach 2022, held Feb. 26 at HOB.

Milton teams dominated the competition, placing first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth out of 20 teams, and three Milton teams qualified for the world competition, set for May in Dallas, when 640 teams will vie for honors.

Mariner Middle team Dark Side Robotics placed first overall, and also won the excellence award for middle schools. HOB teams won the excellence, teamwork and skills awards.

In the competition, students operate robots on a six-by-eight rectangular playing field. Two robots compete in the teamwork challenge as an alliance in 60-second matches, working collaboratively to score points.

In the robot skills challenge, one robot takes the field to score as many points as possible. Matches consist of driver-controlled matches and programming skills matches, which are autonomous with limited human interaction.

During an awards ceremony held March 2 at HOB, students received their plaques, and parents got the chance to try out the robots.

A special surprise award, the Most Valuable Viking, was given to HOB student Geremiah Curtis. HOB robotics advisor and teacher Mark Morey said Geremiah’s team did not qualify for the world competition because Geremiah spent time selflessly helping other teams during the competition. Students and parents applauded when Geremiah was offered a spot as team manager on the trip to Dallas; Geremiah readily agreed to take on the job.

Teams from HOB, Lord Baltimore, Georgetown, Clayton and Long Neck elementary schools participated, as well as Mariner Middle and Southern Delaware School of the Arts.
