Milton Theatre to stage ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ April 19-21

February 21, 2019

Since its reopening in 2014, the Milton Theatre has hosted a number of acts both local and international, plus several children’s productions every summer.

Now, in a long-awaited first, the Milton Theatre will present its first self-produced show. “Jesus Christ Superstar,” featuring a regional all-star cast, will be performed Easter weekend, with shows at 8 p.m., Friday, April 19; 2 and 8 p.m., Saturday, April 20; and 2 p.m., Sunday, April 21. This rock opera-style show is sure to sell out fast.

A full self-produced show is a large undertaking, but one the theater group feels ready to tackle.

“We are very excited about the opportunity this provides not only the theatre but also the community,” said Milton Theatre Director Fred Munzert. “This opens the doors for so much more in the future.”

“Jesus Christ Superstar” is a 1970 rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical started as a rock opera concept album before its Broadway debut in 1971. The musical is mostly sung through, with little spoken dialogue. The story is loosely based on the Gospel accounts of the last week of Jesus's life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem, and ending with the crucifixion. It depicts political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus that are not present in the Bible.

Tickets are $27-$32. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to www.MiltonTheatre.com or call 302-684-3038.
