The Mispillion Kennel Club Inc., a member of the American Kennel Club, is holding an Open Show with AKC-approved conformation judges and Obedience and Rally Obedience Show ’n’ Gos , Microchip Clinic and AKC Canine Good Citizenship Test Saturday, June 18, at 22998 Rum Bridge Road, Georgetown.

The event will have Dr. Jim “Barbeque Jim” Foor’s famed grilled turkey breast, hot dogs, hamburgers, all the trimmings and cool drinks, with tenting in case of too much sun or rain. The Open Show is similar to a Match Show in that no AKC Championship points are awarded, but different in that all judges must be AKC approved and entries will include for the first time breeds in the AKC Miscellaneous Class (in line for full AKC recognition) and Foundation Stock Service breeds (awaiting final approval for the Miscellaneous Class). This means there will be new, rare breeds for people to get to see and know. There is no admission or parking fee, and entry fees for events are very moderate.

A very special event will be the awarding of a $2,000 check given by AKC Companion Animal Recovery to Shore K9 Search and Rescue Inc., headquartered in Harrington, for support of its search-and-rescue canines and their volunteer handlers who perform vital work in times of emergency and natural disaster. The AKC/CAR Fund has donated more than $3 million since its inception in 2002 after the 9/11 tragedy. Members of Shore K9 SAR will be present to accept the award from the Mispillion Kennel Club on behalf of AKC/CAR and will present the Best In Show Award to the winner. For information about AKC/CAR and the fund, go to www.akccar.org.

Conformation, Obedience and Rally at an Open Show are all practice runs for the real thing. Puppies as young as 4 months may enter. Dogs entered in Conformation must be AKC registered or eligible for registration; purebreds and mixed breed dogs are welcome in Obedience and Rally and the Canine Good Citizen Test. For the CGC test, license and rabies vaccination proof must be presented. Once passed, the CGC certificate or tag is a valuable identification that shows a dog’s good temperament, steadiness and willingness to follow basic obedience commands to make it truly a good citizen. Microchips will be given by veterinary technicians. This is a permanent way to identify a dog should it ever get lost. All dogs are eligible for the CGC and microchipping.

Everyone is welcome, rain or shine; all dogs must be on leashes. There will be informational booths, information on dog training and care, and MKC members to answer questions.

For further information, go to www.MispillionKC.org or call 302-856-2199. The club welcomes family, friends, and dogs and reminds participants to bring their own seating.
