Music in contemporary worship is topic at St. Peter's Aug. 23

August 12, 2012

Dean Donovan from St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes and the praise team, led by Dayna Feher, from St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Ocean City, Md., will come together from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 23, to explore music used in traditional churches today as part of their contemporary worship.

This presentation is part of the Summer Spirituality Series cosponsored by St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and Seekers, Spiritual Treasures at St. Peter’s Square. Each Thursday night through Labor Day, expert presenters engage participants in the parish hall of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, at 211 Mulberry St., Lewes. Fellowship and King’s ice cream follow. The public is welcome, free of charge.

Dayna Feher is praise team leader at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. She is a Realtor at Resort Quest in Bethany Beach. Donovan asked her to present with him not only because of her music, but because of her spirit. Anyone who has meant Feher feels the joy and excitement she has for life and for living as a Christian. She has excellent support from her musical team and the church. Feher said going to church is not the purpose for being a Christian, but it is where she goes to strengthen and build herself up to go out and be a Christian in everyday life. The contemporary music she brings to the worship service is an important part of that experience for her and all who attend the contemporary service at St. Peter's Lutheran.

After presenting a history of gospel music last year, Donovan was anxious to take it a step further. Last year's program showed how gospel was not just a style of music, but a way of adding emotion and feeling to the music. Donovan wanted to take a look at how churches are doing this in worship services, especially traditional churches. Intermixed with St. Peter's Lutheran Church Praise Team, Donovan will present examples of worship from traditional churches, from Christian Kirtan to dance and a variety of musical forms.

Donovan was raised in an evangelical church and was praise leader at Denbigh Christian Center in Newport News, Va., as well as Covenant Church in Charlottesville, Va., and has been in the Episcopal Church for 20 years. He also sang with The Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, D.C. for eight years. Locally he is a Realtor with Ocean Atlantic Sotheby’s in Bethany Beach.
