My Favorite Things exhibit to open at Gallery One April 4

March 28, 2018

Gallery One in Ocean View announced its April exhibit, My Favorite Things, will be open to the public Wednesday, April 4, to Tuesday, May 1.

Everyone has favorites. Artists tend to have many, and favorites can lead to a lifetime of painting subjects. The artists at Gallery One will display some of their favorite themes.

Gardens and flowers are stimulating in their beautifully colored masses, and they beckon artists to paint them. Dianne Shearon, referring to her watercolor, “You Are My Sunshine,” said, “Spring is coming, the sun is shining and flowers are blooming everywhere.”

Joyce Condry does not have a green thumb, so she paints those flowers she imagines blooming beautifully in her own garden. “Say It with Daisies,” an acrylic, is a close-up of her secret garden.

“Gardening and painting gardens is a passion of mine,” said Jan Moffatt. “My acrylic painting ‘The Good Earth’ was inspired by the Good Earth Organic Market in Dagsboro. It was inspiring to wander through the garden surrounded by a riot of colors, bright zinnias, tall sunflowers, flowering herbs. I just had to paint it!”

Lesley McCaskill loves painting on location. “When the weather is warm enough, one of my favorite things is painting outdoors. I really experience the day. ‘Country Road,’ a watercolor, was painted on site. While painting I could hear voices from boats on the adjacent canal and the songs of the birds. The weather was fresh and breezy.”

One of Dale Sheldon’s favorite things is to watch shorebirds slowly walking up and down the surf while she listens to the rhythm of the waves as they rush to shore. Her “Egret” acrylic depicts a graceful and beautiful white egret standing at the water’s edge.

Laura Hickman loves light and travel. “I love traveling to new places and discovering the light that exists there,” she said. Her "Light - Split, Croatia,” pastel shows the spectacular light on a cafe, bouncing off the sea and the shiny white granite that covers the ground.

Pears have been favored and painted endlessly by artists. “Exploring fruit in my paintings this past winter coincided with holiday festivities. Pears were plentiful and became the subject of my paintings and our salads,” said Mary Beth Patterson. Her “Leaning Pears” oil portrays her perfect pears found at Lloyd’s Market in Lewes.

Gallery One is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week, and is always staffed by one of the artists. The gallery is at 32 Atlantic Ave. (Route 26), Ocean View.
