Natalie Lutz of Hockessin wins Hair of the Dog 5K

Females flash fast times across the age groups

“Is that a woman?” Natalie Lutz, 40, of Hockessin was lead dog unleashed New Year’s Day on the Bethany Beach boardwalk, sprinting south to north through touristy foot traffic to win the 12th annual Hair of the Dog 5K in a throttle-back time of 19:08. There were 353 total runners in the race.  

Geoff Warren, 46, of Washington, D.C., was second and first overall male in 19:18. 

Mike Sewell, 53, was third overall and male masters winner in 19:27. 

The top six runners on the leaderboard broke 20 minutes. Following the top three were Eric Baumgarter, 28, of Dagsboro, 19:27; Peter Bozzo, 33, of New York, 19:38; and Brent Zeiders, 49, of Etters, Pa., 19:48. 

Tanya Campbell, 40, of Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa., won the female masters title in 21:48.

The race roster was a blend of runners from Maryland, Pennsylvania and Delaware with a smattering of New Jersey, D.C. and Virginia contenders. 

There was a grand masters division for runners 60 and over, which was won by Lee Stumpf of Sykesville, Md., in 23:25. 

The 70-to-infinity male winner was James Rhatigan, 75, of Millsboro in 29:11, with David Downing, 71, of Laurel finishing second in 29:58.

The 70-to-infinity female winners were Linda Carter, 80, of Potomac, Md., in 42:26, followed by Linda Tice, 77, of Ocean City, Md., in 45:42 and Dorrie Derge, 79, of State College, Pa., in 47:27.

Summit MacGray, 9, of Cumberland, Md., won the 9-and-under male division in 26:01, while Ruby Leps, 8, of Lewes ran 24:39 to win the 9-and-under female race. Caroline Warren, 9, of Washington, D.C., finished second in 27:35.
