Naval historian and author to speak at Lewes museum Sept. 20

September 16, 2025

Historic Lewes will host an author talk with Dr. Jayne Friend, a distinguished naval historian whose work explores the cultural and diplomatic impact of the Royal Navy.

The event is set from 5 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Lewes History Museum, 101 Adams Ave., Lewes. A $10 entry fee will be collected at the door.  A wine, beer and cheese reception will follow the presentation.

Friend will present a lecture titled “Destroyer Diplomacy and Anglo-American Relations, 1919-1945,” drawn from her forthcoming book, “Destroyers, Naval Culture and British Identity.”

Friend earned her doctorate in naval history from the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. Her presentation will explore the pivotal role of destroyers in shaping Anglo-American naval diplomacy from the aftermath of World War I through the end of World War II.

Developed in the late 19th century as fast, agile escort vessels, destroyers quickly captured the British public’s imagination with their speed, maneuverability and capacity for daring action. Drawing on extensive original research, Friend’s book offers both a comprehensive account of how destroyers’ operational roles evolved and a deeper analysis of their significance within British culture, society and identity.

The talk will examine how destroyers emerged as powerful national symbols that were employed in propaganda, celebrated in literature, film and art, and embraced through civic traditions such as the World War II-era scheme that saw British towns “adopt” individual ships.

Friend will reveal how these iconic vessels shaped public morale, influenced naval policy and helped define Britain’s international image as a maritime power.

“It’s a real joy to finally bring these stories of destroyers and diplomacy to life in Lewes,” said Friend.

Bill Meehan, editor in chief of Pilottown Press, has worked closely with Friend to help bring her scholarship to Lewes and share it with a community connected to maritime history.

“It’s been a real pleasure working with Dr. Friend, and we’re excited to introduce her work to the Lewes community,” he said. “This has been something we’ve been looking forward to for quite some time, and I think everyone who attends is in for an incredible evening.”
