Need for ongoing focus on women’s health

December 9, 2025

I was pleased to read Dr. David Tam’s letter to the editor in response to Gov. Matt Meyer’s healthcare priorities for Delaware. According to Dr. Tam’s letter in the Cape Gazette, Beebe’s strategic initiatives align with Gov. Meyer’s healthcare transformation plan. This alignment will be critical for our state.

With women living longer than men, the United Nations’ World Population Prospects 2024 says there is a need to prioritize gender-specific healthcare needs, and build stronger social support systems to mitigate potential caregiving burdens.

A great example of this type of focused care here in our area is the Beebe Center for Breast Health. It is such an asset in our local community, and it needs ongoing investment in new technologies and top doctors. Doctors like Dr. Karen Barbosa, a renowned and compassionate breast care doctor and surgeon who is always looking for new and better ways to serve and treat her patients. What an asset to have her right here in our community.

And in the spirit of highlighting healthcare providers in our area, a big shout out also to Kelly Goodenough, PA-C, at Atracare. She is another excellent example of what we need more of in this area. Super smart. Caring. Responsive. A true gem. Michaela Kratsas on her Atracare team is awesome too. And last, but certainly not least, I am so grateful for Dr. Amanda Brandner Smith, OD, at Delaware Eye Clinics. She truly understands my unique eye care needs and gives me the time I need to get all my questions answered. Another healthcare hero in Sussex County!

My deep thanks to all of my healthcare providers for your compassion, commitment and tremendous service. I sincerely hope our government and healthcare leaders, including our insurance companies, will continue to grow their focus on the unique health needs of Delaware women.
