Neighbors learn about Black farmers’ history in Delaware

May 23, 2025

The Tidewater Landing community near Lewes hosted a panel discussion May 4 including representatives from the First State African American Farmers Association along with Delaware Secretary of Agriculture Don Clifton.

Residents learned about the history of Black farmers in Delaware. Topics covered included past discriminatory practices and contemporary challenges family farmers face, particularly the increasing pressure due to rising land prices driven by developers.

Participants shown are (l-r) Marjorie Chapel; Gwen Pierce, FSAAFA president; Clifton; and Andrea Haritos and Taieshia Hyacinth, local farmers and FSAAFA members.
