New films to open at Cinema Art Theater Sept. 1

August 30, 2023

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater, starting Friday, Sept. 1, will present “Bank of Dave” and “Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose.”

A spirited biographical comedy, “Bank of Dave” is based on the true-life experiences of a man who financially helps the people in his community. A successful British van salesman, Dave Fishwick (Rory Kinnear), decides to open a bank that uses local money to fund local enterprises. However, he soon fights an uphill battle as he tries to convince the elite London-based financial authorities to grant him the first new banking license to be issued in more than 100 years.

A wildly entertaining comedy set in 1935 London, “Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose” is based on a (possibly) true tale of a talking animal. When famed paranormal psychologist Dr. Nandor Fodor (Simon Pegg) investigates a family's claims of a talking mongoose, he uncovers a mysterious web of hidden motives. Soon, everyone becomes a suspect in Dr. Fodor's relentless pursuit of the truth. The film also stars Minnie Driver and Christopher Lloyd.

National Theatre Live’s production of “King Lear” will be screened at 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 2, and “Fleabag” will be screened at 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 7.

Jonathon Munby directs Ian McKellan as King Lear in this nuanced and powerful contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, moving and shocking play.

Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, “Fleabag” is the hilarious, award-winning, one-woman show that inspired the BBC hit TV series. “Fleabag” is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life. Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose.

Admission for National Theatre Live is $20 for members, $25 for general audiences, $22 for seniors and $5 for students, with student tickets available only at the theater box office, 17701 Dartmouth Drive, Lewes.

Regular film admission is $9 for film society members, $11.50 for general audience and $5 for students.

For all screening times and dates, and to purchase tickets, go to rehobothfilm.com or visit the box office from 12 to 8 p.m, Wednesday to Friday.
