New Hope summer youth program awarded Freeman grant

New Hope Recreation and Development Center in Ellendale has been awarded a 2022 Freeman Foundation FACES grant of $5,000.

Through the generosity of the Freeman Foundation, the organization will be able to serve community youth with a quality academic and social program.

The Freeman Assists Communities with Extra Support award will be used to fund the five-week New Hope Summer Program, which will kick off Monday, June 27.

Young attendees will be challenged by a rigorous academic program that focuses on math, science and reading. To ensure a positive learning experience, the program caters to different students’ academic needs and learning styles.

Delaware Bookmobile also will visit the center every two weeks to supply books, magazines and videos. Each week’s activities will correspond with assigned themes.

Recreational activities include arts and crafts, movies, basketball, and Olympic and water games as well as off-site activities of skating, swimming and golfing. Students can also enjoy trips to Funland in Rehoboth Beach, Dover Skating Center, and Splash Mountain in Ocean City, Md.

When the program concludes, each student will receive a backpack containing a wide range of supplies for the upcoming school year.
