New novel ‘Ella’s War’ centers on WWII Lewes

May 29, 2023

“Ella’s War,” a historical fiction novel set in Lewes during World War II, is now available from Vine Leaves Press.

Born in Wilmington, author Rusty Allen owns The Writers Studio, a creative-editorial, marketing and promotional-services practice near Philadelphia.

The book explores how main character Ella adapts to running a farm on her own, and the relationship she develops with a German POW assigned to work there. It follows the ensuing repercussions that affect her relationships with her son, the community and her common-law husband who’s been away fighting in Europe.

The Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean have been invaded by German U-boats, and Lewes has become a refuge for survivors of their attacks. When Dieter, an officer from a surrendered German submarine, is sent to Ella as POW farm labor, can she embrace the help for the farm to survive? What happens when Dieter becomes more than a hand to her, amid prying eyes and under her beloved but conflicted son’s watch? How will she choose when her explosive husband returns from Europe wounded from infantry duty against the Germans?

“Ella’s War” depicts women and men whose lives are deeply altered by the circumstances of WWII and the heroic or questionable choices they must make to be true to themselves and emerge through the great conflict.

The book is available wherever books are sold online and at rustyallenauthor.com.
