Newlyweds Justin and Christine Krebs win Breast Fest 5K in Dewey

Justin and Christine Krebs from York, Pa., a running couple who were married two months ago, were the winners at the in Dewey Beach inaugural Breast Fest 5K contested Aug. 16. Three hundred and forty runners completed the race.

Justin Krebs, 40, new to the masters division, was looking to break the course record for a masters runner of 15:59 set by Drew Davis of Stroudsburg, Pa., in 2003, but came up short, leaving the field in his wake in a runaway time of 16:07.

"I think if I had someone to run with I could have gone a lot faster," said the former Millersville steeplechaser who owns a personal best 9:32 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Krebs also ran the Boston Marathon last spring in a respectable 2 hours and 34 minutes. He works for Sprint and is an assistant cross country coach at York Suburban High School.

Christine Krebs, 31, works as a nurse and was the first woman across the finish line, in 20:02. She is also an assistant cross country coach at York Suburban.

“I train at about 40 miles a week and two days on the track," Christine said.

The closest runner to Justin Krebs was Andrew Shine, 26, from Newark, running 18:40.

In all, there were 13 male runners in the chase pack that broke the magical 20-minute mark including former Cape athletes Nick Prestipino, 20, 19:42, and Bryan Mack, 24, 19:24.

The women’s leaderboard after Christine Krebs was Sarah Mendes in 20:32, Krista Booth in 20:36, Katie Thomas in 22:04 and Beth Evston in 22:10.

The next Races2Run event at the beach is the Summer's End 5K Sunday, Aug. 31.

Note: In 1990, Tyanna Barre O’Brien lost her battle with breast cancer, leaving behind five daughters. In honor of their mother, these women created the Tyanna Foundation, a 100 percent volunteer organization. The Tyanna Foundation’s flagship event is Breast Fest, and all proceeds collected from the event are donated to the Hoffberger Breast Center.
