Dewey Beach Town Hall closed Jan. 17

Dewey Beach Town Hall will be closed Monday, Jan. 17, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

No Sussex council meeting Jan. 18

Sussex County Council will not meet Tuesday, Jan. 18. The next regularly scheduled meeting is at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 25. County offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 17, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Sussex awards grants to nonprofits

Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants during its Jan. 11 meeting: $5,000 to William T. Spooner American Legion Post 17 in Lewes for kitchen range replacement; $2,000 to Seaford Tomorrow for community event expenses; and $5,000 to Clothing Our Kids for operating expenses, including a $2,000 youth grant.

Vincent re-elected as Sussex president

During its Jan. 11 meeting, Sussex County Council re-elected District 1 Councilman Mike Vincent of Seaford as president for the 12th year in a row and also elected District 4 Councilman Doug Hudson of Dagsboro as vice president.

Council also approved J. Everett Moore as county attorney and council's chief counsel. Staff from the Moore & Rutt and Parkowski, Guerke & Swayze law firms will represent the board of adjustment and planning and zoning commission, respectively, as assistant county attorneys.

Lewes Historical Society closes until Feb. 10

Due to the recent surge in COVID-19, all Lewes Historical Society properties will be closed to the general public effective immediately, with reopening planned for Thursday, Feb. 10.

RD20 Democratic Committee to meet Jan. 20

The Delaware 20th Representative District Democratic Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 20, via Zoom, with a focus on gearing up for the 2022 elections.

Any registered Democrat in Delaware is welcome, but non-committee members must register by emailing rd20.deldems@gmail.com including legal name and street address for verification purposes.

Portion of Route 36 closed until Jan. 21

A portion of Route 36 (Cedar Beach Road), between Marina Lane and Beach Plum Drive near Milford, will be closed until 11 p.m., Friday, Jan. 21, for the replacement of a failing crossroad pipe.

Detour routes: Motorists traveling east on Cedar Beach Road will take Route 1 south, make a left on Slaughter Beach Road, and then left on to Bay Avenue. Motorists traveling west on Cedar Beach Road will make a right on Bay Avenue, right on Slaughter Beach Road, right on Route 1 north, and right to return to Cedar Beach Road. The road closure is just east of the Cedar Creek Bridge. The boat ramp at Lighthouse Road will not be accessible from Bay Avenue during closure. At all times, residents will have access to their homes but may need to utilize the detour routes.

White Creek dredging topic of Jan. 19 meeting

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control will provide an overview and updates on the White Creek maintenance dredging project during a virtual public information session set for 6 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19. The project near Bethany Beach is in the engineering phase. More information and the link to the session can be found at de.gov/dnrecmeetings.

Since White Creek was last dredged in the early 2000s, shoaling has increasingly impacted navigation in the waterway that connects Indian River Bay to the Assawoman Canal and Little Assawoman Bay. The virtual public meeting will provide a status update, information on the design concept, and the Shoreline and Waterway Management Section strategy to use dredged sediment to restore and enhance coastal wetland areas close to the waterway. Meeting attendees can provide comments and ask questions about the proposed project. Questions may be submitted in advance using an online form for the project.

Food pantry open in Rehoboth Beach

The Lord's Cupboard food pantry at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior is open from 9 to 11 a.m. and 3 to 5 p.m., Wednesdays, for anyone in need of assistance.

The church address is 20276 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth, behind Big Fish Grill.
