Dewey to review charter, code June 3

The Dewey Beach Charter & Code Review Committee will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, at the town lifesaving station.

The committee is set to discuss two possible amendments to the town code: one relating to tree removal and placement and the other to building height regulations. They will also discuss the International Property Maintenance Code and how it may be applied to the town code.

The committee may vote on recommendations to the Town Council regarding these items after discussion.

Dewey BoA to host hearing June 4

The Dewey Beach Board of Adjustment will hold a public hearing and meeting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, at the town lifesaving station.

The hearing will be for a request for a variance from the town code to add a half story to two non-conforming townhomes with party walls extending into the 8-foot side yard setback. 

Both properties are in the Neighborhood Residential Zoning District and are located at 2 Seastrand Court, Units 1 and 2.

After the hearing, the board will discuss and possibly vote on the request.

Lewes council to hold special meeting 

Lewes Mayor and Council will hold a special meeting at 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 4 at city hall to appoint Trina Brown-Hicks to fill the council seat vacated by Amy Marasco.

Brown-Hicks is the chair of the city’s Johnnie Walker Beach Subcommittee and serves on the African American Heritage Commission.

Marasco was sworn-in as Lewes mayor on May 21.

Sea Grant to host emergency training 

Delaware Sea Grant will present an emergency preparedness workshop from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, at CHEER Pelican Cove, 26089 Long Neck Road, Millsboro. 

Participants will hear about evacuations, sheltering in place and making an emergency plan. Exhibitors and speakers will be on site to provide useful information. 

Second Street in Lewes to close June 4

Second Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from Savannah Road to Market Street starting at 7 a.m., Wednesday June 4 for pipe and sinkhole repairs, according to the Lewes Board of Public Works.

The closure is expected to last most of the day.

Second Street will remain open to pedestrians.

Advancing Healthy Lifestyles Conference set June 5 in Dover

The Delaware Division of Public Health’s Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity Prevention Program will host its third annual Advancing Healthy Lifestyles Conference from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, June 5, at Delaware State University, Martin Luther King Jr. Conference Center, 1200 N. DuPont Highway, Dover.

The free, daylong event is designed to empower participants to advance a shared mission of ensuring all Delawareans have the tools, resources and access to Eat Well, Move Well, Live Well.

Delivering the keynote address will be Obi Obadike, MS, founder and CEO of Ethical Inc., and co-author of “The Cut,” a fitness and nutrition guide.

A range of health and wellness topics will be explored in educational presentations, panel discussions, networking, sharing of best practices and success stories, and strategic planning sessions. The conference focuses on improving health equity statewide, with the goal of reducing obesity and other chronic diseases.

Lewes architectural group to meet June 5

The Lewes Historic Preservation Architectural Review Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, June 5 at city hall. The agenda includes continued discussion of the design standards and guidelines.

Torch run comes to Rehoboth Beach

The 39th Annual Statewide Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Delaware will begin Wednesday, June 11, with runs starting at both ends of the state continuing June 12.

A downstate run June 11 will start at 3:30 p.m. at Fenwick Island and travel to the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand for a ceremony at 7 p.m. 

Following the ceremony, officers and athletes will complete a one-mile run to Grove Park.

On June 12, the downstate run will start at 6:55 a.m. on the Georgetown Circle and head to Dover for a 1:45 p.m. ceremony on Legislative Mall.

The opening ceremony for the 2025 summer games will begin about 5 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware.
