Lewes public hearing slated for June 7

Lewes Mayor and City Council will hold a virtual public hearing at 6 p.m., Monday, June 7, regarding the site plan for the Lewes Middle School located off Savannah Road, Sussex Drive and DuPont Avenue. The site plan and related documents as well as a link to the meeting can be found on the agenda at the lewes.civicweb.net

Lewes Mayor and City Council meets June 7

Lewes Mayor and City Council will meet virtually immediately following their 6 p.m. public hearing to discuss a spending plan for American Recovery Plan funds allocated to the City of Lewes. A link to the meeting can be found at lewes.civicweb.net

Rehoboth Beach workshop set June 7

Rehoboth Beach commissioners will hold a workshop at 9 a.m., Monday, June 7, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave.

The agenda calls for an update on House Bill 146, a discussion on permit of compliance requirements, a discussion on fees related to residential waste pickup and a discussion on Grove Park Canal Dock services.

Members of the public who wish to participate remotely must contact City Secretary Ann Womack at least 24 hours before the meeting at awomack@cityofrehoboth.com. The meeting livestream is still available on the city’s civic web portal, but the public will not be able to comment or speak using the broadcast.

Henlopen Acres issues call for candidates

All candidates for town commissioner of Henlopen Acres shall file their notice of intention to seek office with the town manager or mayor by 4:30 p.m., Friday, July 9.

For the 2021 election, voters will be electing two candidates to the board of commissioners for three-year terms. Paddy Richards and Andrew Brittingham are the commissioners whose terms are up.

The town charter requires that a majority of commissioners be bona fide residents of the town. There is no maximum limit of resident commissioners. At least one resident commissioner will be elected this year, so prospective candidates should file their intent to run as a resident or nonresident.

The annual election for Henlopen Acres will be held Saturday, Aug. 28. Polls will be open from 9 a.m. to noon at town hall, 104 Tidewaters. Anyone who wants an absentee ballot packet should contact town hall at 302-227-6411 no later than 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug 24. Absentee ballots must be received at town hall no later than noon, Saturday, Aug. 28.

Hailey's Glen final plan approved

At its May 27 meeting, Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission approved final subdivision plans for Hailey’s Glen, 67 single-family home lots on 33 acres on the north side of Angola Road near Lewes. The preliminary plan was approved in April 2018 with the provision that the community could not share amenities with a neighboring subdivision.

DelDOT expanding Georgetown facility

At its May 27 meeting, Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission approved a final site plan for an expansion to the existing Delaware Department of Transportation administration building at the intersection of Route 113 and South Bedford Street near Georgetown.

The 6,650-square-foot expansion will be connected to the existing 14,300-square-foot building. The plan calls for 48 new parking spaces and crosswalks.

Sussex to discuss collections process

Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m, Tuesday, June 8, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. Included on the agenda are a discussion of the county's collection process, and appointments to the Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission and Sussex County Board of Adjustment. Council will also discuss the reassessment request for proposals and possibly vote to award a contract. DMHOA to meet outdoors June 28 

The Delaware Manufactured Home Owners Association will meet at 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 28, outside at American Legion Post 28 pavilion, 31768 Legion Road, Millsboro.

DMHOA is a nonprofit organization and the only legislative advocate representing the interests of manufactured housing homeowners living on leased land in Delaware. For more information, go to dmhoa.org or Facebook page: dmhoahu, or call 302-945-2122.

DNREC names head of Division of Air Quality

Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Secretary Shawn M. Garvin has named Angela Marconi the new director of DNREC’s Division of Air Quality.

For the last four years at DNREC, Marconi, an environmental engineer and program manager, has been responsible for all air permits issued in the state, overseeing a team that includes managers, engineers and support staff.

“The Division of Air Quality’s Engineering and Compliance section, which includes all air-quality permitting, compliance and enforcement work, has done an outstanding job under her management,” said Garvin in a statement May 26.

Before coming to DNREC in 2015, Marconi, who holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware with a concentration in environmental engineering, worked in engineering positions with Cabe Associates and the Delaware Solid Waste Authority.

Marconi is succeeding David Fees, who is retiring at the end of May after joining DNREC in 1995 as an engineer.

In his 26-year career at DNREC, Fees managed the Toxics Release Inventory reporting program, the air emissions inventory program, and the Airshed Planning and Inventory Program, developing regulations and the state implementation plan under the Clean Air Act. He became director of DNREC’s Division of Air Quality in 2018.

Sussex council awards nonprofit grants

Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants during its May 25 meeting: $3,000 to Millsboro Historical Society for maintenance at the Jacob Godwin School; $1,000 to City of Seaford for its 8-week Citizens Police Academy; $1,500 to Town of Laurel for July Fourth fireworks; $3,500 to Seaford Historical Society for programs and expenses; and $1,200 to Delaware Seaside Railroad Club for building remodel expenses.
