Lewes BoA to hold public hearing July 5

The Lewes Board of Adjustment will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 5, at City Hall.

Board members will elect officers and hold a public hearing regarding a variance request on behalf of Michael D. and Doriel I. Moorman from a side-yard setback requirement at 346 Market St.

Lewes mayor, council OK playground funds

Lewes Mayor and City Council voted unanimously June 29 to approve extra funding to complete the George H.P. Smith Park playground.

Parks and Marina Administrator Janet Reeves had requested an additional $21,444.49 from the city because of cost increases since the 2019 projection of $73,882. 

Those funds were a 50/50 matching grant, costing the city $36,941. 

To date a total of $30,131.49 has been spent in grant and city funds, leaving a balance of $43,750.51. The additional work needed is projected to cost $65,195 and will include electric work, general recreation area and a $20,000 walkway and pad.

Rehoboth workshop slated for July 5

Rehoboth Beach commissioners will hold a workshop at 9 a.m., Tuesday, July 5, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for discussions on possible rule changes for outdoor dining on private property, banning all left turns off Rehoboth Avenue at cross streets on a year-round basis, and parking and traffic concerns on Columbia Avenue at Grove Street.

Rehoboth stormwater task force to meet 

The Rehoboth Stormwater Utility Task Force will meet at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 5, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for discussions on new revenue and restructuring existing revenues.

Rehoboth BoA OKs variance requests

The Rehoboth Beach Board of Adjustment approved variance requests for two properties during a June 27 hearing.

The first approval was for a case at 9 Sixth St.; the property owners requested a variance to allow a second-floor addition to encroach 3-feet-10-inches into the 15-foot-rear setback. The second approval was for a case at 23 Kent St.; the property owners requested a variance to allow an increase in lot coverage from 2,767 square feet to 2,799 square feet.

A third hearing was scheduled for a case at 80 Oak Ave., but the property owners’ attorney was sick and it was postponed. 

Those owners have requested a variance to allow a structure to be placed within the 50-foot required rear-yard setback.

Art in the Parks opening July 2

The Lewes Public Arts Commission will host an Art in the Parks opening event from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, July 2, featuring three of the temporary exhibits installed for 2022. 

A guide will be available at each of the three sculptures – Vivien Collens’ “Lewes Squirts” and Rose DeSiano’s “Absent Monuments” in George H.P. Smith Park, and Letha Wilson’s “Double Arc Leaves and Lava” in Canalfront Park.

Sussex P&Z acts on site plans

At its June 23 meeting, Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission issued preliminary approval for two site plans. The first approval is for a Delaware Electric Cooperative electrical substation on an 8-acre parcel at the southwest corner of the Plantation Road-Cedar Grove Road intersection near Lewes. 

The plan includes a 200-square-foot control building, 9-foot perimeter fence, landscaping, access road and various electrical components. 

The second is for Water’s Edge Church to construct a 6,806-square-foot building and a 1,506-square-foot building on a parcel along Route 16 and Reynolds Road near Milton.

Each final site plan will be reviewed by county planning & zoning staff when all agency approvals are submitted.

Republicans to host annual picnic July 10

Republicans for Sussex will host their annual Big Tent Event, a friends and family picnic, from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, July 10, at American Legion Post 28, 31768 Legion Road off Route 24 east of Millsboro.

Republican candidates will be on hand to meet and talk with attendees. All are welcome to enjoy an old-fashioned picnic of hamburgers and hot dogs, sides, chips, ice cream and cold drinks. There will be a cash door prize and a chance raffle. The cost is $25 per adult, and children under 12 attend free. RSVP by emailing R4sussex@gmail.com or calling 302-945-2586.
