North Shores lifeguard Connor Hessler suffers traumatic injury

2021 Rookie of the Year, 2022 Lifeguard of the Year injured during competition
July 18, 2023

During a Sussex County Lifesaving Association lifeguard competition hosted July 17 by Dewey Beach Patrol, North Shores Beach Patrol lifeguard Connor Hessler suffered a serious injury that will require him to undergo surgery and lengthy rehabilitation.

Ten patrols took part in the July 17 competition. Hessler represented North Shores during the six-person surf dash relay. According to North Shores Beach Patrol Capt. Kent Buckson, the relay involves racing down to the water’s edge, diving in, swimming out 10 yards, and then coming back to shore.

At about 6:30 p.m, Hessler sustained the injury and was pulled out by fellow lifeguards. First aid was administered by North Shores and Dewey Beach lifeguards. Fortunately, according to Buckson, North Shores lifeguard Shane Gilbert is also a New Castle paramedic and immediately began to coordinate efforts to save Hessler’s life. Buckson said Hessler was flown by Delaware State Police helicopter Trooper 2 to Christiana Hospital, where he underwent surgery July 18.

Hessler is a major part of the North Shores Beach Patrol, and after winning Rookie of the Year in 2021 and Lifeguard of the Year in 2022, he became the junior lifeguard instructor in 2023. Following his graduation from Saint Mark’s High School, Hessler enrolled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he is currently a student.

As a way to help Hessler through the recovery process, Buckson started a GoFundMe page July 18. He is hoping the money raised will help offset the cost of medical expenses, rehabilitation and any other unforeseen expenses during Hessler’s journey to recovery.

Buckson set the goal at $25,000 and launched the fundraiser at 10 a.m., July 18. As of 11 a.m., July 19, the community had donated $46,532 to the cause. He said he was amazed by the support from the community thus far.
