This is an exciting time for MERIT, Minority Engineering Regional Incentive Training, to partner with the American Cornerstone Institute, offering the opportunity to launch Strengthening Delmarva Families, an ongoing initiative designed to recognize Cornerstone Families and strengthen families on the Delmarva Peninsula.
MERIT is celebrating its 50th anniversary of impacting local students. From its humble beginnings as a collaboration among the Seaford DuPont Nylon Plant, the Seaford School District superintendent and John Hollis, a Seaford science teacher, MERIT has evolved into one of Delaware’s most successful programs for fostering excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics among minority youth. It has equipped thousands of students with challenging engineering experiences and powerful leadership skills while encouraging them to pursue college degrees. More than 600 MERIT students have gone on to receive bachelor’s degrees, with many obtaining master’s degrees and more than 50 earning doctoral degrees. The program fosters parental involvement, and many MERIT alumni return as volunteers, strengthening the program’s vibrant community and shaping its evolution to meet the needs of future generations. The 50-year sustainability of MERIT is due to the support and involvement of families working together to equip youth and build strong communities.
