Congratulations to Pete Oakley for his performance in the 2018 Senior British Open, held last week at the Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland. The Rookery developer and co-owner won the senior major in 2004.
Oakley played the first round at even par. Unfortunately, he missed the cut after the second round with a 79.
He tied for 109th with PGA Tour veterans such as Jerry Pate and Robert Gamez. Oakley also earned 1,183 Euros.
Kim looks to defend her major with a mix of old and new
In-Kyung “I.K.” Kim won the 2017 ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer, ending a long victory drought. The victory must have boosted her confidence. She won two more times that year – the Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning and O-I, and the Ricoh Women’s British Open. She hopes to defend her Open title this week.
Last year, Kim depended on a mix of clubs she used for several years. They were faithful companions.
Then her clubs disappeared.
Her clubs never made it to the baggage claim area after an American Airlines flight in January 2018. The bag included her official LPGA badge, the clubs, and other personal items. The airline wasn’t much help.
Early this spring, a few news stories noted the disappearance. Some alert and kindhearted fans found Kim’s bag, minus some clubs, at a southern California Play It Again store. The brightly colored tour bag has her name on it. Kim’s ID badge and other items were still in it. You might wonder if the folks running the store noticed that when they agreed to sell this stuff.
Kim was reunited with the found clubs just before the Kia Classic in Carlsbad, Calif., in March. When the media caught up to Kim at the 2018 ShopRite during the Thursday Pro-Am day, she was amiable and pretty funny about it.
“My game’s coming along. I’m still getting used to the new clubs. It feels good to be playing good golf,” Kim said.
She’s using a mix of the old and the new. “I think I can be a club fitter now,” she said with a grin. “I had my old back-up putter, so I didn’t have to replace it. My other clubs were two to three years old and they’re not making them any more. I had to go with the new models. I’m hoping to build some good memories with them,” she said. “I won five times with the old ones.”
Women golfers sought for Nanticoke charity tournament
The Nanticoke Health Foundation will hold its 10th annual Ladies Day Golf Tournament Thursday, Sept. 20, at Heritage Shores in Bridgeville.
The event supports the Allen Cancer Center at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford. The $90 entry fee ($360 for foursome) includes the golf, skills contests, food, and team prizes.
The PINK Links program is also part of the tournament. Golf ball-shaped signs can be posted to honor, memorialize, or celebrate loved ones. The signs are available for $25 each.
The foundation will also hold its 32nd annual Open Golf Tournament Friday, Sept. 21, at Heritage Shores.

RBCC Black & Gold Tournament supports Children’s Beach House
The Rehoboth Beach CC 18-Hole Ladies’ golf group held its 16th annual Black & Gold Charity Tournament June 27. The event raised over $2,700 for the Children’s Beach House in Lewes.
This year, the Black Team won the closely fought competition, 15.5 to 14.5. The winning team members included JoJo Barrows, Pat Beebe, Gina Bergin, Tina Brinsfield, Kathy Carroll, Joan Crowley, Ann Cunningham, Lora Drewer, Sharon Emerson, Kim Hutchinson, Carol Knott, Jeannie Lindsay, Dee Moore, Carole Ann Medd, Shelby Moore, Charlotte Samans, Arlene Simms, Karen Storms and Reagan Strasser.
Harveys win RBCC Mixed Member Club Championship
Steven and Christina Harvey were the overall champions in the RBCC Mixed Member Club Championship held July 28. Dan and Elise Coar took second place.
Jack and Karen Storms won the first flight, followed by Rob and Trish Medd. Penn and Sharon Emerson won the second flight, with Gill and Bee Ekdahl taking second place.
Local club competition results
The Rehoboth Beach CC Ladies 9-Hole group played their Club Championship July 31. Kimberly Hutchinson won first place, with Joan O’Toole in second and Bardelle Offut in third.
The Mulligans Pointe Ladies 18-Hole group played an individual 3 Clubs and a Putter game July 31. Susan Shockley won first place, with Sandy Harrison in second and Dee Prillaman in third.
The Kings Creek Ladies 9-Hole group played an individual T & F game July 25, using only the scores from holes that start with either letter.
Janie O’Connor won first place, with Gail Petren in second, Kathy Nave in third, and Carolyn Horn in fourth.
The Kings Creek Ladies 18-Hole group played their T & F game July 26.
Nan Martino won first place in the first flight, with Anna Dittel in second and Jean Chlastawa in third. Leslie McClintick won the second flight, followed by Atom Irwin in second and MaryAnn Veitch in third. Sue Griesemer won the third flight, with Deb Grant in second and Joan Repetto in third.
