Oh, Construction!

July 21, 2023

I wrote this for fun, but I thought someone might enjoy it. We can sing it to the tune of “Oh Susannah” while we’re stuck in traffic.

Oh, I live right off Route 24
The road runs east to west.
I’m headed for Rehoboth Beach
If I get through this mess

Oh, you can’t see where you want to go,
Orange barrels all around.
I’m driving on the right shoulder,
The only lane I’ve found.

Oh, Construction!
It’s everywhere I go.
I’m stuck behind a big dump truck.
The only speed is slow.

Oh, Delaware has two-lane roads,
no shoulder and a ditch.
Not built for all those great big trucks,
So driving makes me itch.

Oh, I left the house at 8 a.m.,
But I should have left at 7.
If flaggers don’t stop me too long,
Might be there by 11.

Oh, Construction!
I can’t go anywhere.
There’s too much happening all at once.
Somehow this isn’t fair.

Oh, an ambulance is stuck in line.
It’s got to make it through.
I need to move out of the way.
There’s nothing I can do.

Oh, look, I’ve made it three more miles.
We’re creeping right along.
But don’t get too excited,
You’ll be stopped before too long.

Oh, Construction!
You make us all quite mad.
You say we’ll like it when it’s done.
Right now it’s just plain bad.
