Our choices for Rehoboth election

The Cape Gazette editorial board has met with all five Rehoboth Beach candidates. We were impressed and humbled by the qualities each brings.

For mayor: Sam Cooper's genuine forthrightness, grasp of issues and breadth of Rehoboth Beach knowledge; Paul Kuhns' financial knowledge, active involvement in so many organizations, desire to bring more citizens into the process.

For the three candidates seeking two commissioner seats: Susan Gay's homework on issues, ability to understand and articulate so others understand; Kathy McGuiness' many years of experience and accomplishment; Lisa Schlosser's well-honed skills managing international-scale budgets and effective government process.

Which are best positioned to help govern one of Delaware's most dynamic cities for the next three years - a city of less than 1,800 residents, millions of annual visitors, and a budget this year of more than $25 million?

More of an autocrat than some would prefer, Cooper unquestionably gets things done. Rehoboth Beach is a beautiful resort that handles the radical dynamics of seasonal population fluctuations with well-organized and -managed departments. Cooper has led city government for 27 years. No one knows better the ins and outs of his hometown, nor has more experience, contacts and resources, than Cooper. His service is culminating with the important municipal building and wastewater outfall projects. He is synonymous with Rehoboth Beach. Cooper deserves re-election and has our endorsement.

As for Kuhns, Rehoboth Beach will continue to enjoy and benefit from his many talents regardless. He still has another year on his commissioner term.

Gay's grasp of Rehoboth issues, passion for disseminating reliable information to the public and obvious love of the city earns her our unanimous endorsement.

McGuiness serves, accomplishes and wants to keep serving, at the local and statewide level. In her own words, it's in her blood.

Lisa Schlosser is unquestionably capable and wants to serve her new town. A few years of involvement and sand in her toes can be a proving ground. We came to no consensus on an endorsement for either McGuiness or Schlosser.The candidates are doing their work. Now it's up to the voters.
