Outdoor history and art programs to start in Lewes July 11
The Lewes Historical Society is combining art with history and the outdoors in a new program, The Artist as an Historian, for youth ages 10 to 12.
One-hour sessions focusing on the historic menhaden net wheel will take place outdoors at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m., Saturday, July 11, at the LHS campus at 110 Shipcarpenter St., Lewes. Sessions will focus on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal Saturday, July 18, at the historical society campus.
The final programs will take place Saturday, June 25, in the garden of the historic Cannonball House at 118 Front St., Lewes, where students will learn about its architecture.
Each hour-long session will be instructed by a local artist who will teach the students to re-create specific objects and artifacts from the society’s collection. The sessions will be taught exclusively outside.
The public is welcome to stop by the Lewes Historical Society properties to observe the junior artists at work and learn more about the region’s history. Access to the interiors of the historic buildings will not be possible at this time. The cost per student is $25 and includes instruction, a take-home art packet, sketchbook, conte crayons, artist’s satchel and a small bottle of water. One accompanying parent is admitted free, and each additional adult ticket costs $5 per person.
