Outlet Liquors 5K: small race that’s fast at the front

Bettlers pick off age group titles 80 to 99

Barbara Bettler and Budd Bettler from The Villages of Florida were vacationing in Dewey Beach Aug. 23, so they ran the Outlet Liquors 5K, with each taking home first-place trophies in their respective 80-99 age groups. Their time of 33:32 equates to a pace of 10:49 per mile. They are both 81.

April Anderson, 80, grabbed second female in that age group in a time of 42:57. 

The overall race numbers were down, as just 98 runners completed the course. 

William Makinen, 25, of Alexandria, Va., was the overall winner in 16:35. Declan McDermott, 25, of Ocean View was second in 17:18. 

Matt Sparacino, 47, the Harrington Harrier, won the male masters title in 18:20.

Emily Tuthill, 40, of Pine Bush, N.Y., was the overall female winner in 21:26. Susan Dunn, 48, of Laurel won the female masters division in 23:41. 

Donald Cowie, 70, Hollsopple, Pa., a runner since high school, defies the deterioration model, posting his fastest time of the summer in 25:46.

“I don’t train,” Cowie said. “I just race.”

Jerome Harris, 60, of Lincoln ran 28:37. Richard Tikiob, 70, of Rehoboth Beach ran 25:54; he ran so fast he took his own picture crossing the finish line. 

Mary Kessler, 76, of Harbeson ran a sizzling 26:20.

Joe Aukward, 64, a blind runner from Rehoboth Beach, ran with his guide Debbie Isser, 71, of Milton, crossing the finish line in 29:52.

Bruce Pringle, 78, of Rehoboth Beach, one of two Vietnam vets in the race, ran 31:01.

Kevin Molloy, 77, of Lewes ran 48:19. 

The next Races2Run beach race is the Summer's End 5K set for 7:30 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 31, at Northbeach in Dewey Beach.
