Overfalls to welcome new year with lighted anchor drop Dec. 31

Foundation celebrates holiday season with annual party, awards
December 25, 2019

The festive season is in full swing for Overfalls Foundation members, who held their annual Holiday Party and Award Ceremony Dec. 13 at the Inn at Canal Square, Lewes. Don Gansauer was recognized for his outstanding work in managing the recent trip to Dorchester Shipyard in New Jersey for complete repainting of the Lightship Overfalls, and for directing the weekly preservation crew known as the Dirty Hands Gang.

The President’s Award recipient was Dave Beck, ship guide coordinator, and the Behind the Scenes Award recipient was Sue Townsend, manager of the Ship Store and Welcome Center.

Wrapping up the holiday season will be the anchor drop at the ship on New Year’s Eve. A lighted anchor will drop from the top of the mast at midnight to celebrate the arrival of 2020. There will be traditional music and singing of “Auld Lang Syne” to welcome the arrival of the next decade. Fire pits will help keep folks warm on a frosty night. The event is free and open to the public beginning at 11:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 31.

The Lightship Overfalls is a National Historic Landmark located on the canal in downtown Lewes. Open to the public from May to October, this floating lighthouse is one of only a few surviving examples of a maritime necessity for almost two centuries.
