Pair of downtown Lewes stores closing
The signs in the windows of Deanna’s & Piccolino say 50% off. The mannequins have everything off, covered only by more sale signs.
It’s the beginning of the end for the iconic women’s clothing boutique at 113 Second St. in Lewes. The store will close for good Friday, Oct. 31.
Deanna’s has been a staple of the downtown business district for 30 years, but co-owner Jenny Donohue said it’s time to go, so everything must go.
“It’s been a wonderful run,” she said. “It’s been a great time, but all good things come to an end.”
Donohue is retiring. She said co-owner Darica Ward is looking for her next adventure.
Donohue and Ward bought the store from the namesake, Deanna Wagamon, nine years ago. They also own the Henlopen Trading Company across the street. That store, which opened in 2019, is already permanently closed.
“We have marvelous customers, great brands,” Donohue said. “It’s been a good run. Lord knows, it’s time for me.”
Lewes Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Betsy Reamer said she does not know what businesses might take over the prime storefronts on Second Street.
She said the owners played an important role in the business community during, and immediately after, COVID.
“They were active participants in the initiatives that we put into place to make sure customers felt safe shopping and then to draw business back to the historic business district. They also supported the chamber’s marketing efforts for the downtown events,” Reamer said.
