Patriot Day masses set at St. Jude Sept. 10, 11
St. Jude the Apostle Church in Lewes will observe Patriot Day at its four weekend masses set for 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, and 7, 8:30, and 10 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 11. This 15th anniversary of terrorist attacks on 9/11 will be marked with a moment of silence at 8:48 a.m. during the 8:30 a.m. liturgy, marking the exact time the first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
Masses will include prayers for the safety of the homeland and first responders and protection of men and women in the armed forces, especially those in harm's way. Police chiefs and fire chiefs from local agencies have been invited to be present.
After the 10 a.m. mass, a color corps from the Fr. Vincent Capodanno 4th Degree Assembly of the Knights of Columbus will lead the congregation outside to the flagpole with lowering of the Stars and Stripes to half mast, “Taps” and placing a memorial wreath in memory of all who lost their lives in Manhattan, Shanksville, Pa., and the Pentagon. After the ceremonies, participants will gather again in church, where participants will be invited to share memories and stories about those who lost their lives in this great tragedy.
Veterans are reminded that military regulations permit them to wear medals earned in the service, and all visitors are encouraged to wear patriotic colors for all four weekend liturgies.
