Paul H. Mylander, community leader

April 25, 2023

Paul H. Mylander passed peacefully Friday, April 21, 2023, at home in Lewes. He was born April 14, 1943, in Baltimore, Md., and he lived in Towson, Md., until his family relocated to their family farm on the Eastern Shore at Love Point on Kent Island. Paul experienced many happy memories from his boyhood, where he became a hunter, a pilot and a skydiver, logging over 200 jumps. He attended Randolph Macon Military Academy and graduated from East Tennessee State University as a member of the SAE Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army as a commissioned officer. After a tour in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Joint Service Commendation Medal.

In 1990, Paul moved to Delaware after working for 20 years in the financial services industry in Washington, D.C., to serve as president/CEO of Delaware National Bank, which later became Fulton Financial. He retired in 2005 as chairman/CEO of the organization.

Paul was a lifetime member of Ducks Unlimited and thoroughly enjoyed his pheasant hunting trips to South Dakota and entertaining his friends with embellished stories. He loved golf later in life and was involved in many fundraising tournaments. Paul was a devoted advocate of Beebe Medical Center and served as chairman on both the medical board and the foundation board, and chaired multiple capital campaigns to benefit both organizations. He was also an avid supporter of the American Heart Association and was honored as the 2009 recipient of the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Paul was also active in Rotary International and was the capital campaign chairman for CHEER, the nonprofit Sussex County Senior Services. He served on the board of Bank of Delmarva, Community Bank Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, Independent Community Bankers of America, and Delaware Bankers Association. Paul was also on the boards of Delaware State Chamber of Commerce, Lewes Chamber of Commerce, and Georgetown Chamber of Commerce.

Paul is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Patricia Mylander; his siblings, Charles Mylander (Marilyn) and Jane Wainwright; daughters Virginia Swift, Elizabeth Mylander and Caroline Moulsdale (Christopher); stepchildren, Allison Carpenter (Karl) and Vincent Moore; six grandchildren, Amanda, Severn, Annabelle, Nicholas, Tristan and Isabelle; and three step-grandchildren, Savanna, Charlie and Destany; as well as a large extended family.
