Peninsula Golf & Country Club wins Interclub Pro-Am

Peninsula Golf & Country Club golf professional Jesse Williams led his team to victory in the ninth Delaware Interclub Pro-Am, held July 21 at Heritage Shores near Bridgeville.
The event format pitted 23 four-player teams against each other in a best three of four scoring framework in both net and gross for 18 holes. The best four low gross teams, then played an alternate-shot playoff of three holes, followed by a sudden-death playoff if required.
Williams’ amateur partners, all members of Peninsula, were Joe Roeder, Dan Wing and Dan Bittle. They beat a team from DuPont Country Club with a par on the second hole of sudden death.
Williams also won the pro competition with a five-under 67. Michael Chanaud of Bear Trap Dunes and Will Scarborough of Peninsula tied for second. Peninsula golf pro Greyson Rossi made it three out of four for the Millsboro golf course with his fourth-place finish.
James Parker, Wayne Creeden and Rich Gilman joined Frank Filippo, yet another Peninsula golf pro, to win the net team contest.
The Cape Region and Sussex County fielded 15 teams in the tournament, with groups from Peninsula, Bear Trap Dunes, Heritage Shores, Rehoboth Beach Country Club, Kings Creek Country Club, Baywood Greens, Bayside Resort and Hooper’s Landing.
Not feeling too PC about PCC
I had a fun round of golf July 18 at The Rookery. Fun as in shooting a score that matched my course handicap for the popular Milton layout. I posted the results online, and the gapgolf.org handicap system showed that my score differential for the day was 8.2.
Not so fast, it seems.
At least seven other golfers also had a good day at The Rookery that Friday. The combination of these results triggered the PCC element of the handicap system – short for playing conditions calculation.
According to the United States Golf Association, this automated feature of the system attempts to address those occasions when a course’s playing conditions are easier or more difficult than expected. The PCC is only calculated when a minimum of eight golfers post scores from the same course made that same day. The adjustments can range from -1.0 (easier than normal) to +3.0 (harder than normal).
In my case, the score differential rose to 9.1 – and since I am trying to lower my handicap back to where it was two years ago, I am none too pleased about this.
On the other hand, if I was one of those folks for whom the term sandbagger is a badge of honor, this result would help.
Perhaps I should also rethink my attitude about playing golf during a nor’easter.
Silent auction for college golf scholarships
Bidding is underway in the silent auction supporting the Delaware Junior Golf Scholarship Fund.
Each year, the DJGS Fund typically awards five golfers college scholarship stipends, with continued support for up to four years dependent on maintaining a good grade point average. Founded in 1986, the fund helped more than 170 students with well over $1.5 million.
The fund’s current primary source of revenue is its golf tournament, scheduled this year for Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. The auction includes a variety of tempting options, from low-digit Delaware tags to resort stays to rounds of golf at popular destinations.
The auction closes at 7 p.m. the night of the tournament.
